I don't know whether there are any laws saying the railroad has to keep snow off the sidewalk part of the crossing. However, if there is such concern about railroad crossing safety that you can get a "Mandatory $250.00 fine or 25 hours of community service for a first violation" for crossing the tracks two and a half minutes before any train would reach that point (the reader is encouraged to stop right now and do nothing for two and a half minutes, to gain some appreciation of that time span), one would expect the railroad to do be compelled to do everything possible to make sure that no one can slip while crossing, hit his head, and remain unconscious for three minutes. A $10,000 fine sounds about right for a first violation. (More about this later.)
